My Initial Thoughts

Yamaha is quite known for ranking their products’ complexity in accordance with the skill of the user for whom they were intended.

I’m sure this is something that you already know if you’ve read some of my other reviews.

Yamaha’s EZ-220 (as its initials suggest) has proven to be an easy starting synthesizer for people who are trying to get the basics of playing a piano right.

To provide you with a better understanding of the product, I’ll list some of its features as well as its pros and cons before concluding the review.

Feel, Specifications, Dimensions, and Integrations

EZ-220 sports 61 touch-sensitive keys that can light up in order to aid you in playing.

The keys are non-weighted considering that this is a starting keyboard.

There are around 390 instruments to choose from such as different variations of guitars, strings, drums, etc.

This synthesizer comes with 100 built-in songs, which feature scores from different musical genres.

You can easily get the hang of each genre by using this interactive music system.

Yamaha made sure that these songs are linked with their exclusive iPad applications.

An interesting feature that I’ve noticed, is that most of these apps do not require manual operation.

For example, with their Page Turner App, you can focus on playing the actual song without having to turn the pages yourself.

Advanced Features and Performance

Everything is automatic and the song is synced with the page turning app.

The connection is wireless, but there’s an option to connect your synthesizer to a computer or an iPad via USB cable.

Interestingly enough, the iPad communicates with the keyboard through inaudible tones which the keyboard emits.

Alongside this, there’s a very useful integration of their learning system called Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S).

This system lets you practice performing using either both hands or just one until you perfect your skills.

Useful as the whole product may seem, it’s definitely not without flaws.

I was looking for a way to record my performance but couldn’t find a way to do so.

Apparently, the keyboard does not come with such an option.

Also, there’s no way to layer and loop sounds.

The fact that these features are absent might be a deal breaker for some people.

However, there is a workaround for recording.

It is possible to record your performance through the use of the app’s audio record function.

Pros & Cons of EZ-220

Benefits

Has Yamaha Education Suite interactive learning system integrated into it

Perfect integration with iPad and apps

Huge variety of instruments and presets

Drawbacks

The keys are non-weighted, it the keyboard feels a bit toy-ish while playing as an adult

There’s no way to layer sounds

You can’t record without the app

My Final Thoughts

All in all, I’d say that its overly simplistic design makes this synthesizer an excellent option for beginners.

As a synthesizer that marvelously executes its core functions, I can say that this device definitely lives up to Yamaha's name.
